Is there enough electricity and kindness to reach the White House?

ShockingBarack.com

ShockingBarack.com is a labor of love. Hopefully all of your labors in life are filled with love although sometimes they’re filled with money, too. But Brammo is still a very small company and their advertising budget is essentially zero. What they offer instead is brilliant minds and progressive thinking that’s just amazing to be around and that’s worth a lot.

About three weeks ago, Dave Schiff and his partner Alex Burnard came in and told me they thought we should give a Brammo to the President because he needed to know that America's most energy efficient vehicle was being made in Oregon by a scrappy bunch of electric vehicle visionaries. I bounced the idea off of Craig at Brammo who loved it and suggested we retrace the path that the American car company CEOs took when they recently visited DC. This was exciting because now I had the chance to break the news to Dave that he would be putting his money where his mouth was and so he’d be making the journey with Brian, the head designer from Brammo. If you look at the site Dave is the guy in the impossibly dorky brown helmet. He actually rides to work in that helmet most days.

With a budget of zero we knew the only way to make the journey would be to rely on the kindness of Americans along the way to get us there. So the guys will be using couchsurfing.com to recharge their bodies at night and asking for donations of electricity to charge up their bikes. (Each charge is about 35 cents so we’ll actually pay folks if we don’t have donors ready at a given stop.)

We’ll also be looking for help in meeting President Obama. We figure somebody must know him or know somebody who knows him so we can schedule a good time to present him with the Brammo. We don’t want to surprise him since that kind of thing probably gets you face down and spread eagle with a secret service agent kneeling on your back. But we want to shock him with the fact that without any bailout money these enterprising and innovative dudes at Brammo have a homegrown solution to our country’s transportation crisis. And it’s not theory. It’s for sale.

The guys leave in a couple of days from Detroit, and they’ll be shooting video along the way to post each night. They’ll be tweeting and blogging from the road. Although I think a lot of what happens is going to be weird and hilarious, I can’t help but be very curious if there is a possibility that social media can actually get these guys and this company an audience at the White House. There is no doubt social media is helping a new breed of politician get elected, but does it go the other way when we need their attention? We shall see.

Alex, I like the thinking behind this, but is this just another marketing ploy for Brammo by using a public official?

It's a way to get attention but it's not a ploy. Brammo and all electric two wheeled vehicles need the same consideration electric cars are getting and they need the federal government to recognize that. Brammo doesnt have the political clout (lobbyists) or huge advertising budgets to get attention. Yet Brammo is growing and making new clean tech jobs in America every day. It's a great story. If publicly engaging our elected public officials is a ploy, then I guess democracy is a ploy too.

So, it's @brammodesigner and Dave Schiff riding the Enertias to Washington! Brammo's Aaron Bland will be in the support vehicle. Thanks for filling in some of the information gaps, Alex. As for finding a connection to the President, come on -- can't the Burger King get them an audience?

Nice, Alex! I'm actually thinking I should move to somewhere on the route. Can we send a donation to help with a meal or something?

You can charge up at my house (well...it's a bldg) in Downtown Dallas...easy access to all Freeways, perhaps not the most direct route to D.C., but our bldg is totally surrounded by parking lots offering cool picture oops with the city as the backdrop. :)

Also, has anyone contacted @oprah ?

Much Love,

@zaneology

PS- we have sofas too :)

Thanks for the offer. We don't have a way to accept donations. Sponsorship needs to be in the form of a place to stay, a place to charge and connections to the White House.

Alex - just wondering, but if people wanted to donate, couldn't they donate toward some carbon offsets for the support vehicle?

Yeah. Offsets for the support truck is a very cool way to show support.

Alex - thanx for the tweet - here's a cool app to tweet the " shocking barack " journey location based ! Areaface is a tool that let's you search for " twitter " users in a specific city or town ( that the brammos will be traveling through )

When you visit the site, just click anywhere on the map and Areaface will load recent tweets from that location !

But there's a twist, if you want you can further narrow the results by keyword ( ie streets where brammo's will be recharging )

You can see each person's tweet by putting your cursor over their avatar- the results are almost in real time ! ( we could post messages live from the helmet - signatures ect

Try it http://www.areaface.com/twitter

Cool bananas Alex, may the force be with you on this great idea !

Not to rain on the parade (or snow), but at 42 miles per charge, and 4 hours to recharge, that's a long trip from Detroit. Right around 8 mph average. Gifts to politicians have their own restrictions, even if it's a great idea and story. Should be an adventure though.

soccerD - not to rain on your parade bro - it's a bit like saying to the Right Brothers - " Aw dang your first flight was only a few feet - we all know what happened from then onwards - Brammos Rule !

soccerD said...
Leon - Not really like that at all. The Wright Bros were the first in powered flight. Detroit to DC at the speed of a marginally-fit semi-determined bicyclist isn't new. That said, I love any ride and the adventure will make for a good story. I hate chase trucks. I think the Brammos are cool city bikes. I think riding them x-country reveals their weakness, not their strengths. I think "give one to the president" will get attention. I think giving a Brammo to someone that actually needs transportation might be more useful and interesting in the longterm. But it lacks the "off to see the wizard" storyline, IMHO. Anyway,I wish them a safe journey.

soccerD - IMHO - Well said , must agree with you on the weakness being slightly exposed , also like your insight on the need for " a yellow brick road " something that the Alex is very good at ! Maybe the " hoopla " will deliver a " baked in " strategy - maybe the sizzel will generate revenue to deliver a meaningful long term result that resonates !

Great sharing with you - thanx !

Love the helmet idea. We may try to do that. The bike is a commuter bike no doubt. But we actually like the stopping to charge for this story because it's a new chance to meet and great and crate content every time. And i don't see 40+ miles as a weakness. That covers 90 percent of America's daily commute. For me it's more than double the range I need. Thanks to all for the ideas can comments and support.

I actually like the helmet in human cannonball sort of way.

Since the value of a Brammo exceeds the allowable amount for a gift to a politician, the boys will have to donate it "to the American people". In theory, that means anyone could ask the Prez to lend it. Which brings us back the the secret service guy you mentioned.

Oct 15, 2009
leon orsmond said...
Awesome Alex - strategically it's the answer to short commutes then ( no weakness at all ) love the stopping and chatting - rich content - self perpetuating - with surprises along the way - we call them easter eggs ( hidden gems ) glad you like the helmet ( be nice if it happens ) - absolute pleasure - may the lightning juice be with you !

Yes. The no gifts to the president is a wrinkle. Perhaps we could guarantee him a job at the factory when he retires from office. Somebody suggested the Smithsonian which would be very appropriate. But only after Obama gets a ride.

brammofan said...
Oh, you can give gifts to the president... they just have to accept them on behalf of a grateful nation. (Actually wrote a post about this on my blog). I get the sense that it's more of a conceptual gift - as in "here... we present you with the solution to the climate change problem. Please accept a free ride on this fantastic vehicle as a symbol of our efforts." The "present him a solution" phrase has been tweeted and retweeted, it's like a game of Telephone... by the time we're done, it's going to sound like Brammo is handing over the keys to the whole factory. It's the "public option" for transportation.

Alex - the " signed helmet " would go a long way to strengthening the gesture of messages of hope from the people - almost seal the deal in a way !

Yes, that would be great, him and all the Secret Service Agents that have to guard him AFTER his Presidency ends. They'd have to build them there own breakroom.

Cool idea, of course it's been around for years, but for some reason walking, biking, crawling all the way to X to gain recognition for Y never gets old.

The bikes seem pretty cool to, although 40 miles per charge is a bit too low.
